Background information
A number of factors such as the terrors of Jim Crow Laws and the growth of cities as epicenters of industry and culture contributed to the Great Migration of Southern Blacks to Northern, Midwestern, and Western Cities in the early 20th century. The result was an influx of diverse cultures colliding and creating complex, subversive, and revolutionary art. In particular, we will trace the literature and art that captured the experience of the Great Migration as well as the particular cultural scene that defined the Harlem Renaissance. We will approach these experiences through a variety of media (art, images, informational texts, literary texts, and music), and we will connect the recurring themes of the period with our own.
