Unit Description
In this unit, we will begin by exploring the violence against Indigenous Peoples in the Americas as a way of situating the current state of Native American rights in a historical context. With this background in mind, we will dive into Sherman Alexie's Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which follows Arnold Spirit's tumultuous High School experience navigating the profound differences between life at home on the Rez and at his wealthy, predominantly white school, Reardon. Watching Arnold bounce between different worlds of privilege and inequality will help us critically consider our own privileges and/or lack thereof.
