Unit Description
In this unit, we will combine our study of Urban Centers with our criticism of the American Dream. We will explore the complexities of racial inequality in pre-Civil Rights Chicago through Lorraine Hansberry's Raisin in the Sun, which documents one family's struggle to fulfill their dreams. In this study, we will see the many ways that dreams are deferred both by interpersonal circumstances as well as structural inequalities, most notably the predatory housing policies that trapped so many families in cycles of poverty. We will connect these policies to larger discussions of Colonialism and Institutional Racism.
